In Remembrance of

Father Felix Cassidy, O.P. (The Happy Priest) - June 3, 1927 - November 13, 2015

Fr. Felix was ordained in June 1954. His lifetime of service throughout the Western Dominican Province took him from his native San Francisco to being pastor in Reno, NV, Portland, OR, and places in between. Fr. Felix was also a missionary in Chiapas Mexico, where the locals referred to him affectionately as “the Happy Priest.”

Here at home the faithful of St. Dominic’s Parish, where he spent the last years of his priestly life, called him “the Spirit of St. Dominic’s.” Likewise he was the Spirit of the Shrine, of which he was an associate for decades, ministering to pilgrims, leading the Rosary before every Novena Mass, hearing confessions, and generally pastoring all those who came to him.

Everyday up until the day before his passing Fr. Felix concelebrated the St. Jude Mass, and although now confined to a wheelchair he continued to bless attendees with the St. Jude Relic after Mass as usual. A few short weeks before, on October 31, he had been concelebrant at the Dominican Order’s 800th Jubilee Mass, celebrated by the Master of the Order, during which he was paid special tribute. What Fr. Felix exuded to all who came into his presence was a deep love for God, the Blessed Mother, the Church, and the Dominican Order he served so well. He was beloved throughout his native San Francisco and by Shrine pilgrims and devotees who came from farther afield. His faith was infectious, and he will be deeply missed by many.
